Paulo Mabumo - Centro para aprender a ler e escrever

Center for Learning to Read and Write
The Name The Center Carries

The Center bears the name of Paulo Mabumo, a respected local teacher whose lifelong dedication to education continues to inspire the community. Founded in 2017 and located in his former homestead in Mabumwine, Maciene, the Center stands as a living legacy—carrying forward his commitment to opening pathways to learning and brighter futures for children.

Why It Was Created
Despite increased school access, many Mozambican children struggle to read and write in Portuguese. Overcrowded classrooms and limited teaching support have contributed to low learning outcomes, with only 4.9% of Grade 3 students demonstrating basic literacy skills in 2019 (MINEDH).
What We Do
The Paulo Mabumo Center is a welcoming space for learning and growth, where children strengthen their Portuguese reading and writing skills, which are essential for success in school and work, self-confidence, and active civil participation.

Each year, about 180 vulnerable children (Grades 1–6) take part in literacy activities and receive a hot, nutritious meal, sometimes their most substantial meal of the day.

How We Work

Primary school teachers from the Maciene community lead the program, using child-centered, participatory methods that nurture curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning.

Impact

More than a literacy program, the Paulo Mabumo Center is a place where children learn to read the world—and begin to write their own future in a context in which their narratives have been written by circumstance and not shaped by potential and opportunity.
